Firefighters work to control a blaze that broke out on State Line Road in Milton Township Tuesday afternoon.

A vacant home was destroyed by a fire that broke out around 1:30 p.m. Tuesday on State Line Road just west of Ironwood Road in Cass County.

Niles Charter Township Fire Chief Gary Brovold said there was heavy fire upon arrival in the structure and in the yard.

“It took a couple hours to get it under control,” he said. “We were hampered a little bit at the beginning by power lines that had fallen on the ground and were arching. AEP got there and shut the line down.”

Niles Township and Clay Township responded because calls were coming in from both sides of the state line. The home was in Milton Township.

No injuries were reported.

Brovold said there was some concern that the fire might spread to a nearby residence because of the way the wind was blowing.

“We thought we might have another house on fire, but we nipped it just in time,” he said.

Firefighters from seven different agencies responded, including Clay Township, Niles City, Niles Township, Buchanan City, Bertrand, Howard and Edwardsburg.

The cause of the fire is being investigated.
