Gusty winds made fielding difficult in game one of a doubleheader Tuesday between second-ranked (Division II) Edwardsburg and Coloma.

The Eddies had a harder time dealing with the conditions as the Comets took advantage of seven Edwardsburg errors and prevailed, 13-4.

Coloma rallied to win game, 4-2, giving them sole possession of first place in the Wolverine Conference West Division with a 6-0 record. Edwardsburg dropped to 4-2 in the division and 13-3 overall.

“It affected both teams,” said Edwardsburg coach Randy Brooks about strong winds that blews out to right field. “There were balls that hit the ground for both teams. I think they handled it a little better.”

The Comets scored eight unearned runs in the opener. Coloma scored six runs, four unearned in the third inning, and added four, three unearned, in the fourth.

Edwardsburg got a solo homer from Kaley Frank in the first inning and got a solo homer from Layne Stinnett in the third. McKenzie Creed and Rachel Borden each had two hits for the Eddies.

In game two, Edwardsburg scored two runs in the top of the fifth to take a 2-1 lead. Savannah Dixon and Stinnett each collected an RBI single.

Coloma rallied to score three runs in the bottom of the sixth with the big hit being Katie Scheuer’s two-run homer.

“I thought (Coloma starting pitcher) Emily (Najacht) pitched better against us in the second game,” Brooks said. “She’s crafty and a hard thrower. She has good stuff. She’s one of the best pitchers in the area.”

Stinnett and Borden each singled twice in game two.
