Niles senior Tala Gentry had a big day at the plate as the Vikings swept a Big 16 West Division doubleheader from visiting Portage Northern.

Gentry doubled, tripled and homered against the Huskies as well as picked up the win pitching as Niles defeated Portage Northern 17-7 in the opening game, which lasted six innings.

The Vikings completed the sweep with a 10-6 win in the nightcap.

Gentry doubled in that game as well.

“We really came out and I would have to use the word crushed the ball in game one,” Niles coach Ryan Frontczak said. “The girls really hit to a level I have not seen before out of them. The negative was our defense in game one, I know it was windy, but that’s no excuse. We have to make those players no matter what.

“It was impressive to see how these girls dealt with a little adversity tonight in the second game. They really came through and it shows you how much this team is willing to battle.”
