Mary L. Moyer, 83, of Niles, died with her family gathered around her at 8:25 a.m. on Thursday, April 10, 2014, at her home following an extended illness.

She was born on June 6, 1930, in Niles to John Allen and Elise Marie (Keen) Thomas. She attended school in Niles, and was graduated from an academy for girls in Chicago where she also began a college career. She returned to Niles and was employed at the restaurant at the Four Flags Hotel, and at the former Pickwick Club. She enjoyed a summer home at Baldwin, Mich. and winters in Florida. She moved to Florida full-time 12 years ago, but returned to Niles during her final illness.

She was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles #4399 in Dade City, Fla., where she was also named “Mother of the Year” and served as a past president of the Ladies Auxiliary. She enjoyed playing darts and bingo, going to the casino and cooking for her family and their guests.

On Sept. 15, 1953, in Niles she married Walter W. Moyer, Sr. with whom she celebrated the 52nd anniversary of their wedding prior to his death on March 6, 2006.

She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Charlotte Deitz; by her parents, John Thomas and Elsie Frklich; and a sister, Joan Linn and brother, John Thomas.

Surviving family includes her children, Treasa Wetzel, Debby (Ken) Wolf, both of Niles, Walter Moyer, Jr. of Albuquerque, New Mexico, Fawn (Tom) DeForest, Ralph Moyer, Chuck (Rita) Moyer, Robert (Linda) Moyer and Sandy Hungerford, all of Niles; 29 grandchildren, 45 great-grandchildren, and four great-great-grandchildren; and Mary’s brother, Bob Thomas of Texas and many nieces and nephews.

A time of memory for Mary Moyer will be at 1 p.m. on Sunday, April 27, 2014, at the American Legion Post #26 at Cedar and Third Street in Niles with Hospice Chaplain Scott Labbe officiating. The family will gather privately at the Hinchman Cemetery in Baroda, Mich. for interment.

Contributions in memory of Mary Moyer may be made to Hospice at Home. Arrangements were made at the Halbritter Funeral Home in Niles.
