Smith’s walk-off single gives Dowagiac the victory

Matt Smith went 2-for-3 and delivered the game-winning walk-off single as Dowagiac held on for a 10-9 win over Decatur in non-league baseball Tuesday afternoon.

The Chieftains led 6-2 headed into the fourth inning before the Raiders caught fire and scored eight of its nine runs in the fourth and fifth innings to take a 9-7 lead on Dowagiac.

Daquon Brooks picked up the win in relief for the Chieftains. He worked 2 and a third innings. Nate Lindsey started and pitched the first four and a third innings before giving way to Dean Klann who faced retired one batter in the fifth.

Dowagiac finished with six hits, including a double by Zach Williams, who was hit by a pitch twice.

Klann drove in three runs, while Williams and Smith both drove in a pair of runs.

Dowagiac was leading 2-1 in the fourth inning when the game was halted due to darkness.
