Firefighters from two different departments made quick work of a fire that broke out inside a detached garage shortly after noon at the corner of Cedar and 11th streets in downtown Niles.

Niles City Fire Chief Larry Lamb estimated that the garage sustained damage between $20,000 and $30,000.

The address of the property was 1021 Cedar St.

Two vehicles parked in front of the garage were also damaged.

Lamb said Niles firefighters were initially tied up at another call prior to the garage fire being dispatched around 12:10 p.m.

Niles Township firefighters assisted on the call along with Southwestern Michigan Community Ambulance Service and Niles Police.

The fire was extinguished before it could spread to the home, which was located only a few feet away.

Lamb said the cause of the blaze is undetermined at this time.

The homeowners were at home at the time of the fire.

No one was injured.
