Looking to make cosmetic improvements both inside and out, the owners of a Niles Burger King have submitted a site plan to remodel the existing fast food restaurant at 1250 S. 11th St.

Juan Ganum, Niles community development director, said Burger King would add to the property a substantial amount of landscaping and sidewalks, among other things, to appease the city’s 11th Street Overlay District.

“We have an opportunity here to help them shape how the building looks thanks to the new overlay standards,” Ganum said during a meeting of the city’s planning commission Wednesday evening.

The planning

commission tabled the site plan Monday to allow Ganum to investigate with a Burger King architect the feasibility of closing the lot’s southernmost driveway and adding connections to adjacent properties.

Commission members suggested that Burger King could redirect its drive-through lane in front of the building if it were to close the south driveway. Currently, motorists enter the Burger King parking lot through the north driveway and exit through a separate driveway to the south. Both empty to South 11th Street.

Commission members were pleased with plans for the building’s exterior.
