Two people have been hospitalized following what police are describing as a stabbing that occurred at a duplex at 508 Vine Street in Niles around 11:40 a.m. Thursday.

Chief Jim Millin, of the Niles Police Department, said a male and female, both around 30 years of age, sustained cuts and lacerations during an altercation inside the multi-story residence on the city’s north side.

Police would not release the names of the subjects, but Millin said they are related.

“Exactly who the aggressor is, it is too early to say,” he said.

No one was in custody Thursday afternoon, but Millin anticipates charges will be filed.

“It’s too early to say what they will be. It could be anything from aggravated domestic to attempted homicide,” he said.

Niles police arrived to find the female subject at the residence. Millin said the male subject was not present as he had already been taken to the hospital by a family member or friend.

Emergency personnel and officers could be seen escorting the female subject to a Southwestern Community Ambulance Service ambulance waiting outside the duplex at around noon. The female had what appeared to be a bandage wrapped around her head.

Millin confirmed that the female subject did sustain a laceration to her head. He said she is in stable condition, but did not know the condition of the male subject as of Thursday afternoon.

A trail of blood droplets could be seen outside the duplex, winding around the front of the structure from one door to another.

Police obtained a search warrant and could be seen taking photographs and collecting evidence inside and outside the structure Thursday.

Millin said police believe the altercation occurred inside the No. 508 duplex.

“Because of their (the subjects’) condition, our officers were only able to obtain brief statements from both of them,” Millin said. “We still have some information to gain there.”
