Once the turnovers stopped, the Edwardsburg boys basketball team dominated Wednesday’s Wolverine Conference West Division game against Dowagiac.

The Eddies outscored the Chieftains, 69-33, over the final three quarters, in coasting to an 84-53 win.

After turning the ball over seven times in the first quarter, Edwardsburg totaled only five turnovers in the second and third quarters.

Defensively, Dowagiac had no answer for the hot shooting Eddies as the hosts shot 52-percent (30-of-58) from the field and made 12 3-pointers.

“(Dowagiac) came out with a lot of energy,” said Edwardsburg coach Steve Wright. “They really get after it and they were hot early. We kept talking about staying patient and to keep doing what we need to do and, hopefully, our shots would fall and they did. We hit a few shots in the second and third (quarters). That really got us going.”

Dante Razzano scored 23 points, including four 3-pointers, grabbed five rebounds and blocked three shots to lead the Eddies. Derek Pierce added 14 points, including three 3-pointers, and grabbed six rebounds off the bench. Jackson Gaideski had 13 points and 12 rebounds, Grant Szalewski totaled 12 points and six rebounds and Dylan Hulett contributed 11 points, including three 3-pointers for Edwardsburg, which improved to 12-5 overall and 7-2 in the division.

Edwardsburg outrebounded Dowagiac, 42-19.

“I’m more disappointed than anything,” said Dowagiac coach Danum Hunt, whose team fell to 9-9 overall and 5-4 in the division. “We didn’t come to play tonight. We got outhustled. We were terrible on the boards. Defensively, we were terrible. We weren’t disciplined with what we needed to do on offense. Just a bad display of Dowagiac basketball tonight.”

Davion Highsmith scored 24 points, including four 3-pointers, to lead the Chieftains. Brandon Winchester-Jones added 10 points.
