Manager Sue Majerek recently made the decision to close Majerek’s in downtown Niles. The store will officially close Saturday. Until then, Majerek’s will offer a closeout sale, with items reduced to between 50 and 75 percent off.

A white sign announcing a “store closing sale” went up in the window of Majerek’s gift shop in downtown Niles Saturday.

Sue Majerek, store manager, said placing it there was one of the most difficult decisions she has ever had to make.

“I’ve been putting it off for about the last three months now, but it was time,” Sue said. “I love downtown Niles, I love my customers and I love buying. I’ll probably remember my customers the most. They were great.”

Majerek’s will officially close Saturday. Most items are marked between 50 and 75 percent off.

Sue said the downturn in the economy ultimately led to the store’s closing. She began managing at that location in 2009.

“Niles just doesn’t shop Niles anymore. I don’t want to say it in a mean way, but it’s true,” she said.

After the store closes, Sue said she will probably do some substitute teaching while working at MCM Discounts on South 11th Street. Sue is co-owner of MCM Discounts.

“The (MCM) store is doing really well,” she said.

Building and business owner Tom Majerek said he is reviewing two options for Majerek’s: sell the business outright, or partner with someone who needs a place to store their products.

“I believe there is someone out there that would be interested,” he said.

Sue said a few select gift lines from Majerek’s would be sold at the Niles Four Flags Antique Mall, which is operated by Sue’s sister-in-law.
