Donald Carbon, 80 of Buchanan, passed away Sunday, Feb. 2, 2014 at Lakeland Community Hospital in Niles.2-5CarbonObit

Don was born Sept. 21, 1933 in Buchanan to Fred and Madalyn (Stretch) Carbon. He was a proud graduate of Buchanan High School. After high school he attended Ferris State University and then returned back to his family business.

Don spent the entirety of his life around Carbon’s, working there at a young age and managing the business for many years before taking it over in 1987.

He was an extremely giving man, not only in his community but also all over the world. During the The Oklahoma City Bombing on April 19, 1995, Don provided food for all the emergency workers for weeks. He received an award from the Governor of the State of Oklahoma for all he gave during the recovery in Oklahoma City.

Every December Don would donate flour product and bakers if needed to many different organizations, fund raisers and churches throughout Southwest, MI and Northwest, IN. At one time he also owned his own group of Pancake Houses and syrup line. The famous carbon waffles could be found all over the world. He married Angela Draper in 1989 at a ceremony in Las Vegas, Nevada. Don loved vacationing, he was able to retire, and in his remaining years spend quality time with his wife, Angela and son, Spencer.

Don is survived by his wife Angela Carbon, two sons; Scott Carbon of South Bend, and Spencer (Destyni) Carbon of Niles, three stepsons; David, Terry, and Jim Niven, stepdaughter; Barbara Bribler, three grandchildren and one great grandchild.

He is preceded in death by his daughter; Elizabeth Carbon in 2013, sister; Mary Lou Jasper in 2012 and his parents.

Visitation for Don will be held from 4-8 p.m. on Friday, February 7, 2014 at Hoven Funeral Home, Buchanan. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, February 8, 2014 also at Hoven Funeral Home.
