Lesta Smiles is often one of the smiling faces that will greet you at the front desk at the Cass County COA Lowe Center.

Smiles always knew she wanted to volunteer after she retired. And, in fact, that is exactly what she did. The day after she retired, she started as a volunteer at the COA.

Smiles had worked for a local doctor as a receptionist and office manager. Part of her job included ensuring many of the practice’s senior clients gain access to in-home care and Meals on Wheels. She knew how much help the COA was to the community and made it her mission to volunteer there.

At the time she started, the COA was in need of help at the front desk and Lesta was a natural.  She still helps out at the desk in addition to a variety of other volunteer activities. She and her husband Walt are both involved in helping at COA fundraising events.

Smiles has been involved in a variety of fundraising activities and also volunteers for other programs such as the etiquette workshop and Grand Fest. Her dedication to the COA has not gone unrecognized, and she was asked to be a member of the Board of Directors several years ago.

When it comes to seeking a volunteer, how can you top someone who offers their service the day after retirement? And Smiles always does it with a smile.
