Last year, the Niles-Buchanan YMCA Thanksgiving Day Run sponsored by Chemical Bank, set new records for participation and funds raised.

Whether or not that happens again this year is yet to be seen, but you can count on one thing when the 32nd annual race starts at 8 a.m. Nov. 28, more than 2,000 runners will hit the streets of Niles.

Not only did the YMCA set records last year with 2,443 runners, Minnesota’s Ben Jacobs became the first runner to win both the 10K and the 5K run.

The Thanksgiving Day run usually draws some of the top marathon runners because the 10K race earns individuals points toward the national circuit. That’s the reason why Jacobs made the trip down from Minnesota and it paid off for him.

Jacobs rank 16:07 in the 5K race and then ran 33:07 in the 10K.

Jennifer Brake of South Bend was the women’s 10K winner with a time of 41:05, while Niles’ own Maddie Rodts won the 5K event with a time of 18:50.

There is still plenty of time to register for this year’s race. Cost is $30 for individuals and $45 for a Family Pack until Nov. 26. Cost Nov. 27 or race day morning will be $35 for individual or $55 Family Pack.

Besides the 10K and 5K runs, there will also be a 5K walk and a one-mile fun run/walk.

You may pick up registration forms at the Niles-Buchanan YMCA or register online at https://www.signmeup.com/site/online-event-registration/94309.
