Shummy Allen Cochran, age 57 of Dowagiac, formerly of Niles, died on Sunday, Nov. 10, 2013 at his home unexpectedly, but of natural causes. He was born June 5, 1956 in Niles to Robert Allen and Dorothy “Dutch” (Schanbacher) Cochran.

Shummy was a 1974 graduate of Niles High School. He was the former owner of A & J Tool Rental in Niles and owner of The Inn-Between, between Cassopolis and Dowagiac. He was also a former member of the Niles and Dowagiac Elks and Eagles Clubs.

Shummy is survived by his daughter, Cristy McNeary, of Grand Rapids, Michigan and sister Randy Asmus of Niles. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Debi Simpson.

There will be a Memorial Luncheon at 12 Noon at the Dowagiac Elks Lodge #889 on Saturday, November 16, 2013.

Contributions in memory of Shummy may be made to the ALS Association or the American Cancer Society’s – Niles-Buchanan Relay for Life, Cubbies for a Cure Team.

The Halbritter Funeral Home, Niles, is assisting with arrangements.
