Nancy Jane Dungey-Mitchem, 84, of South Bend, formerly of Cassopolis, died peacefully Thursday, Oct. 31, 2013, in Memorial Hospital, South Bend, in the presence of her family and friends.
Nancy was born July 15, 1929 in Cassopolis, Mich. to Hurley and Sarah Ann (Simmons) Dungey. She married James Anderson Mitchem Aug. 23, 1949 in South Bend. He preceded her in death Jan. 3, 2006. She was also preceded in death by her parents; one brother, William Dungey; one sister, Caroline June Harris and three nephews, Larry Dungey, Phillip Dungey, and Darrell Dungey.
Nancy loved to read and talk on the telephone for a long time. She enjoyed traveling, whether motor home trips, bus trips throughout the United States, or going on cruises. She enjoyed shopping. Nancy was very active in her church and loved the friendships and fellowship.
Nancy will be greatly missed by family and friends. She is survived by one son, Terrence (Diana Orr) Mitchem of Andover, Minn.; one granddaughter, Andrea Jane Mitchem of Andover; two nieces, Nora (James) Lee of Cassopolis, Barbara (Leo) Byrd of Vandalia; one nephew, Eric (Redell) Dungey of Dayton, Fla.; a host of great nieces and great nephews; special friends, Lonnie and Charlotte Taylor, Ruby Walker, Barbara Muncie and Bingo Buddy Alfrieda Redding, all of South Bend; the Ladies of the Breakfast Club; and her friends and church family.
Family and friends will gather Sunday, Nov. 3, 2013, from 4 p.m. until time of service at 5:00 p.m. in Christian Life Center, 1717 North Hickory Road, South Bend with Pastors Doug and Shanna Neal officiating. Mrs. Mitchem will be laid to rest beside her late husband in Prospect Hill Cemetery, Cassopolis, at 9 a.m. Monday, Nov. 4, 2013.
