Niles resident Lindsey Cloutier showed up to her own 5K fundraiser and bone-marrow drive Saturday wearing a Mardi Gras mask.

The 30-year-old, who is battling leukemia for the third time, said she had to take off the mask because it quickly became soaked with tears when she saw the more than 100 people who showed up to support her at the Halloween-themed “Fright for Lindsey.”

“It’s just amazing,” she said. “It’s a beautiful thing about living in a small town.”

The fundraiser, which was held at Brandywine Middle/Senior High School, generated around $3,000 to help Cloutier.

Delete Blood Cancer, an organization dedicated to recruiting bone marrow donors, set up a station where people could register to become donors.

Cloutier is one of 14,000 people nationwide on the waiting list for a bone marrow transplant.

Cloutier said she is feeling good and that doctors are happy with her progress.

The Leader Publications employee said she would head back to Chicago Monday to finish up her second round of chemotherapy.

As for the 5K race, Nigel Bosch was the overall winner, while Whitney Shearer was the first female to cross the finish line.
