Couple gets two years for heroin delivery

Two Niles residents were sentenced to more than two years in prison this month for delivering heroin to a Niles man who later died from an overdose.

Joseph Alan Dumond, 25, and Kali Marie Heft, 23, both received 29 month sentences in Berrien County Court on the felony charge of delivery of heroin.

Dumond was sentenced Oct. 14 and Heft Oct. 21.

On Jan. 14 officers from the Niles Police Department were dispatched to a hotel in the 900 block of South 11th St. in Niles on a report of an unresponsive person.

Niles Police, Niles Fire and Southwestern Michigan Community Ambulance Service arrived to find 24-year-old Ryan Anthony Wetzel deceased. An autopsy and toxicology analysis completed by the Berrien County Medical Examiner determined Wetzel died from mixed drug toxicity.

The death prompted an investigation by the Niles Police Department, which led to the arrest of Dumond and his girlfriend, Heft.

Both were charged with delivery of a controlled substance causing death, according to police.

Dumond and Heft pleaded guilty to delivery of heroin Aug. 19.
