The Dowagiac volleyball team dropped to 5-12 on the season and 1-3 in the Wolverine Conference West Division following a sweep by Coloma Thursday night.

The visiting Comets defeated the Chieftains 25-20, 25-12 and 25-16.

Dowagiac looked strong at the onset of the match; but as their endurance began to wane, so too did their play. Dowagiac made mistake after mistake and committed more than a few unforced errors as the Comets pulled away in the match’s later stages.

Dowagiac coach Sara Lawrence says her team needs to learn how to harness their frustrations and focus them to eliminate the mental mistakes that have been plaguing their season.

“It seems like we always battle the other team hard until we make a mistake or two, and then we end up battling ourselves for the rest of the time. This has been an issue for us all season. We talked about it after the game and I think they understand what they need to do and where we are at,” Lawrence said.

Lawrence and her team will be looking to bounce back next Thursday when they travel to South Haven to take on the Rams at 6 p.m.
