Edwardsburg volleyball coach Chrissy Breisch didn’t have to say much to her team during a 25-14, 25-14, 25-10 Wolverine Conference win Thursday over Comstock.

Breisch never called a time-out and she spoke to her team for only a few minutes after the match.

The second-year coach of the Eddies just admired her team’s ability to trail just once against the Colts. Edwardsburg’s lone deficit came at 1-0 in the third game.

“Awesome,” said Breisch about calling no time-outs. “That felt so good. The feeling we had tonight is what we’ve been looking for, for the last two years. That’s our best win since I’ve been the coach.”

Who could argue with Breisch considering there were only three ties in the match, which took less than an hour to play.

Edwardsburg overwhelmed Comstock with its offensive balance. Five different players had at least two kills and six different players had at least one service ace.

“Everyone played really well,” Breisch said. “I don’t think that we had one go-to person. It’s the best teamwork I’ve seen this year. It was a really good team win. Every girl played at least in one game.”

The Eddies owned a 17-8 lead in game one, an 18-8 lead in game two and a 19-8 lead in game three. Catie Razzano’s kill was the game-winning point in game one. Taylor Sipe-Bretschneider’s tip over the net was the game-winning point in game two and Lindsay Nunez’s service ace won game three and the match for the Eddies.

“We came out strong and sided out really quick which we’ve been working on in practice,” Breisch said.

Comstock struggled to pass off of Edwardsburg serves. The Eddies finished with 22 service aces.

“We do a lot of drills with getting aces,” Breisch said. “We also had way too many missed serves tonight. But, we also got those aces because we were being aggressive.”

Edwardsburg’s top server was Payton Szlanfucht, who finished with 11 aces. She also finished with 19 assists as a setter.

“I had a lot of help from my passers,” Szlanfucht said about her setting. “My teammates were moving their feet and doing great. With serves, I was just on tonight.”

Szlanfucht, who’s a sophomore, was on the varsity last year when the Eddies finished fourth in the Wolverine Conference West Division and below .500 overall. Edwardsburg improved to 6-2-1 with its win on Thursday.

“We’re definitely more motivated and coming out strong in matches,” said Szlanfucht about the difference in the team this year. “We just have to keep communicating on and off the court.”
