Dowagiac Public Safety Director Steve Grinnewald reports that at approximately 9:15 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 6, his officers were dispatched to a private-property accident involving a vehicle striking a light pole in a parking lot in the 900 block of Spruce Street that is shared by several businesses.

Officers arrived on scene and located a Chrysler mini-van that struck a light pole. The van was occupied by two subjects, the driver, a 36-year-old male subject from Dowagiac, and a second subject, the passenger, a male subject from Dowagiac. Neither subject was injured, however, an ambulance was called to the scene to check both.

It was determined the driver was intoxicated. He was subsequently arrested for operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated. He was lodged at the Cass County Jail on that charge. Police withheld his name pending arraignment.

Officers were assisted at the scene by members of the Dowagiac Fire Department and Pride Care ambulance service.

This accident remains under investigation at this time.
