MISHAWAKA, Ind. — Barbara E. Pauley, 77, of Mishawaka, formerly of Edwardsburg, passed peacefully at home on Aug. 2, 2013, surrounded by her loving children.

Barbara was born on Dec. 8, 1935 in Elkhart, Ind. to the late Harlie and Treva (Frederick) Long. In 1943, her father fulfilled a lifelong dream of buying a farm and relocated his family to Adamsville. By fulfilling this “dream”, however, they left behind all modern conveniences and moved into an old farmhouse that had never been introduced to electricity or indoor plumbing. Despite the hardships, Barbara shared many happy memories of those fun and challenging times.

Graduating from Edwardsburg High School in 1953, she soon married and started a family. While raising her children, she worked for the H.E. Long Co., her father’s automotive repair/lawn and garden equipment business. She began as the bookkeeper but later became co-owner and office manager. She took an eight-year hiatus in 1980 and moved to Titusville, Fla., returning to the area in 1988. She retired and moved to Mishawaka in 2010.

Always creative, Barbara enjoyed sewing, crafting, gardening, quilting, shopping, playing cards, visiting friends and traveling. She loved her trips and cruises to Hawaii, Alaska, Mexico, the Caribbean, Germany, Switzerland and Austria.

She will always be remembered as a hard-working, feisty, witty, generous, compassionate, fun-loving person who was loved by all. She’ll be terribly missed by her children, Debra Starkweather of Mishawaka, James (Rich Deuitch) Pauley of Granger, Ind. and Scott (Rhonda) Pauley of Edwardsburg. Also surviving are her grandchildren, David Smith of Mishawaka, Ashton (Jeff) Gould and Megan Pauley, both of Titusville; great-grandson, Mason Gould of Titusville; sister, Marilyn (Lewis) Nelms of Shelbyville, Tenn.; brothers, F. Michael (Sharon Radde) Long and William “Sonny” (Carol) Long both of Edwardsburg; brother-in-law, James Huston of Edwardsburg; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Judy Huston, grandson, Kristopher Smith; and beloved pooches, Teddy and Benji.

Visitation for Barbara will be Thursday, from 4 to 7 p.m., at the Hope United Methodist Church, 69941 Elkhart Rd., Edwardsburg, MI 49112. Service of Remembrance will be conducted by the Rev Barbara Jung (retired minister, Unity Church of Peace, South Bend) on Friday 11 a.m. in the church, with visitation one hour prior.

Memorial contributions  may be made to Pet Refuge, 2300 W. 6th St. Mishawaka, IN 46544 or Center for Hospice, 111 Sunnybrook Ct., South Bend, IN 46637.

The family would like to extend their gratitude to Dr. Kevin Kaufhold and Christine; Dr. Norman Gray and Jen; Dr. Jerry Hofferth; and all the angels at Center for Hospice. Your kindness and compassion will never be forgotten.

Arrangements are by the Paul E. Mayhew Funeral Home, 26863 West Main St. Edwardsburg, MI 49112-0024.
