Rebecca Byers knows the importance of events like the Niles-Buchanan Relay for Life that raise money for cancer research.

Byers, of Niles, is a cancer survivor, having been diagnosed with lymphoma in 2010. The cancer is in remission.

“Research money really matters,” said Byers, who is serving in her second year as co-chair for the N-B Relay for Life. “I don’t know if I’d be here if we didn’t have Relay for Life bringing in research dollars.”

This year’s event, which began Saturday and ended Sunday morning, raised $68,300, according to co-chair Margaret Dawson. Teams can continue raising money until Aug. 31. Dawson said the goal is to raise $76,000. Last year, $72,000 was raised.

“It’s just amazing to see what our small community can do when they get together,” Dawson said.

The event, which asks teams to walk around a track for nearly 24 hours, took place at Niles High School.

Cheerleaders from Buchanan, Brandywine and Niles combined for a special cheer during opening ceremonies. It was the first time the three rival schools have come together to cheer for a good cause.

“It was great to get everyone out there,” said Shannon Blackwell, Buchanan varsity coach.
