Eleanor N. Edwards, 94, formerly of Sioux Trail in Niles, Mich., died at 7:51 p.m. on Tuesday, July 9, 2013 at West Woods of Niles following a brief illness.

She was born on June 9, 1919 in Niles to Alfred and Lulu (Swartwout) Pfister. She was graduated from Niles High School as Salutatorian of the Class of 1936 at the age of sixteen. She has lived in Niles all of her life, and was employed in the offices of the Berrien County Courts for 20 years, retiring in 1984.

“Eleanore” was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Niles where she served as an Elder and Deacon, and sang in the Choir. She was also a member of the Niles Service League, and several area bridge clubs. She enjoyed flower gardening, and was an avid fan of the Chicago Cubs, but her greatest joy was her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

On June 5, 1943 in San Francisco, Calif., she married CPO Hubert H. Haslett, U.S.Navy. They celebrated thirty-one years of marriage prior to his death on July 8, 1974. Later, on Dec. 27, 1986 in Niles she married Howard J. Edwards who preceded her in death on Aug. 2, 2005. She was also preceded in death by her parents, well-known Niles artist Alfred Pfister and Lulu Pfister, a sister, Ann L. Klute and a brother, Alfred H. Pfister.

Surviving family includes her children, Stephen (and Gaylene) Haslett of Plainwell, Mich., William (and Diane) Haslett of Niles, Marilyn (and Tom Hoff) Haslett of Niles, and Robert (and Monica) Haslett of Temperance, Mich.; Howard’s children, Pamela (and Philip Headley of Annandale, N.J., and Beverly Jane Mather of Ringwood, N.J.; grandchildren, Erik (and Cheri) Locker, Adam (and Julie) Locker, Mattie (and Drew White) Haslett, Doug Haslett, Mindy (and Chris) Hahaj, Jake (and Heidi) Mucha, Maggie Hoff, Malorie (and Scott) Ninemeier, and Michael Haslett; great-grandchildren Tyler, Paris, Lily, Ashton, and Kellan; a sister-in-law, Barbara (Mrs. Alfred) Pfister of Grand Haven, Mich.; and many nieces and nephews.

The funeral service for Eleanor Edwards will be at 11 a.m. on Friday, July 12, 2013 at the First Presbyterian Church in Niles with the Rev. Fran Lane-Lawrence of the church officiating. Committal will follow at the Silverbrook Cemetery in Niles.

The family will receive relatives and friends on Thursday from 6 until 8 p.m. at the Halbritter Funeral Home in Niles. Contributions in memory of Eleanor may be made to The Foundation of the First Presbyterian Church.
