Donna M. Hartsell, 65, of Cassopolis, passed to the open arms of the Lord on Sunday morning, June 23, 2013, at Borgess-Lee Memorial Hospital in Dowagiac, surrounded by her family.

Donna was born June 9, 1948, in Chicago, to Donald and Theresa (Boylon) Merriman.

She married Thomas Lyle Hartsell on July 1, 1978, in Cassopolis.

She was preceded in death by: her parents, Donald and Theresa Merriman; one brother, Michael Merriman; one stepson, Scott Claire Hartsell; and one granddaughter, Katie Lynn Ruth.

Donna worked for 43 years in the insurance business, finishing her career at Kemner–Iott agency in Cassopolis.

She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Edwardsburg Chapter. Donna loved writing books in her spare time and traveling to the

Upper Peninsula. She had the best sense of humor and she so loved her family.

Donna will be greatly missed by family and friends.

She is survived by: her husband, Thomas Hartsell Sr. of Cassopolis; one daughter, Charmin (Daniel) Ruth of Jones; two sons, Thomas Hartsell Jr. of Cassopolis and Timothy (Tina) Hartsell of Cassopolis; six grandchildren, Eric (Stacey Bazan) Ruth of Cassopolis, Barbie (Frank) Starr of Niles, Cassie Hartsell of Cassopolis, Scott Hartsell of Marshalltown, Iowa, Emily Hartsell of Cassopolis, Jeremiah Hartsell of Cassopolis; three great-grandchildren, Adam Starr, Ellie Starr and Maddie Yuhas; one sister, Fran (Clarence) Kiggins of Dowagiac; one brother, Jim (Terri) Merriman of Niles; two sisters-in-law, Jennifer (Dave) Grames of Three Rivers and Valerie (Mike) Ford of Marcellus; and several nieces, nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews.

Family and friends will gather Monday, July 1, from 10 a.m. until time of service at noon at Pleasant View Church of Christ, 60550 Crooked Creek Road (corner of M-60), Cassopolis, with the Rev. Larry Settle officiating.

Mrs. Hartsell’s remains will be laid to rest in Prairie Grove Cemetery, Penn Township.

The family prefers memorial contributions to American Cancer Society, Great Lakes Division, Southwest Michigan Office, 1400 West Milham St., Portage, MI 49024; or a local hospice of the donor’s choice.
