For the eighth consecutive year Rex Pomranka, the Brandywine varsity wrestling coach and assistant football coach, will be taking a group of 45 workers to Brooklyn on Father’s Day weekend to earn money for the wrestling and football programs by parking cars at Michigan International Speedway during this weekend’s NASCAR festivities.

Brandywine athletics has been sending a group of workers to Brooklyn to help park cars for both the Father’s Day race and the fall race in August each of the last eight years.

The group has been so successful with how they carry themselves, and how well they work that they are not only asked to come back every year, but have also been one of the first groups contacted whenever special events come to the property.

This year, the weekend of July 19-21, MIS will be hosting the Faster Horses Festival which is a weekend long concert featuring some of today’s biggest and best country music stars including Florida Georgia Line, Thompson Square, Jake Owen, Dierks Bentley, Jason Aldean and Luke Bryan.

“They are happy with what we do, and they always ask to have us back every time,” said Pomranka. “When MIS scheduled the concert for this year, they requested Brandywine to work the parking lot.”

Brandywine athletics earns $3,000 per weekend, and many of the volunteers come back for every event that the Bobcats work.

“We meet a lot of people while directing traffic and helping with the parking. We get to socialize with them and get to know them, and many of them come back every year for the races, and park in the same lot each year,” said Dennis Williams, who along with his wife Rae and his daughter Monica will be back at it again this weekend.

“The excitement of the racing, the great time with family and friends camping out, the experience of the fan plaza, and the opportunity to meet drivers is something that keeps us coming back,” Williams continued. “We even get to see some of the local families that volunteer every time, that we’ve gotten to know over the years, that we may not get to see otherwise since our kids have all graduated.”

All of the volunteers get to camp out for the weekend. They also get a t-shirt with many local sponsors listed on it who donate money, food, water or any item that helps get the group through the weekend. They get to see racing all weekend, or in July they get to see country music concerts, and all of the proceeds go to their hometown Brandywine athletics.

For anyone going to the races, or the concert, the group from Brandywine manages Lot 11, which is the biggest parking lot along US-12.
