Dowagiac woman charged with embezzlement

Vicki Zachary has been charged with embezzling more than $50,000 from a Dowagiac dentist office.

Vicki Zachary, 304 Gray St., Dowagiac, has been charged with embezzlement from Burling and Gillesby, DDS, P.C., of $50,000 or more but less than $100,000 and eight counts of obtaining by fraud a controlled substance as a result of an incident which occurred on or about September 2011 through December 2012 at 530 Riverside Drive, Dowagiac, which was investigated by the Dowagiac Police Department.

The maximum penalty if convicted is 15 years and/or $25,000 fine or three times the amount embezzled, whichever is greater for the embezzlement charge. The defendant is also facing a maximum penalty of four years and/or $30,000 fine for the obtaining by fraud a controlled substance charges.

Zachary turned herself in on the warrant on Jan. 2, according the Tom Atkinson, the director of public safety in Dowagiac.

Bond was set at $25,000 cash/surety on the embezzlement charge and $10,000 cash/ surety for the eight counts of obtaining by fraud a controlled substance with an arraignment date for all charges scheduled for at 9 a.m. Jan. 16.
