47-year-old suspect steals gas, flees police

Dowagiac Director of Public Safety Tom Atkinson reports that officers of the Dowagiac Police Department arrested an Ohio woman for larceny of gas and fleeing and eluding police after a short vehicle pursuit, according to a report by Tom Atkinson, the director of public safety in Dowagiac.

Police were dispatched at 12:01 a.m. Wednesday to Shell Mart in Dowagiac for a suspect who pumped $40 worth of gas and left without paying.

Officers were given descriptions of the suspect and of the vehicle.

A short time later, officers located the northbound vehicle on North Front Street near Prairie Ronde.

The officer attempted to stop the vehicle, which initially pulled to the side of the road, then continued north on M-51 at a high rate of speed.

Police pursued the vehicle, which eventually pulled over on M-51 near Dewey Lake Street, where the driver was taken into custody.

The driver, a 47-year-old female from Euclid, Ohio, admitted stealing gas and fleeing police.

She was lodged at the Cass County Jail pending authorization of charges by the prosecutor’s office for larceny of self-service gasoline and fleeing and eluding police.

Police withheld her name pending arraignment in Cass County Fourth District Court.
