William Shaffer, 85

William A. “Bill” Shaffer, 85, of Niles, passed away peacefully Monday, June 25, 2012, at the Center for Hospice Care in South Bend.
He was born Nov. 7, 1926, in South Bend to the late Albert and Mamie (Finn) Shaffer.
After graduating high school, Bill went on to serve his country proudly in the U.S. Army during World War II, where he received several medals. Bill was able to fulfill a passion of working in Cape Canaveral, Fla., for NASA as an engineer. He was also a talented bookkeeper for many years until his retirement in 1988. He lived in both Florida and California and enjoyed the coastline. In his spare time he also enjoyed watching horse racing and driving around in his silver Corvette.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Albert Joseph Shaffer; and three sisters: Clara Newton, Marian Schantz and Lauretta Lalime.
Bill is survived by two sisters, Norma Shaffer, of Niles, Mildred Dudeck, of South Bend; a special friend, Bettina Michaels, of Los Angeles; and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Friday, June 29, at 1 p.m. Brown Funeral Home. A time of visitation will begin one hour prior to the service.
An entombment will follow at Riverview Cemetery in South Bend.
The family would also like to thank Dr. Richard Wein for his thoughtfulness and compassion shown to Bill and his family.
