EDWARDSBURG — One last hurdle stood between Edwardsburg and an undefeated regular season Lakeland Conference campaign.

And that was Thursday’s opponent — Brandywine.

What appeared to be a league showdown between the top two tennis teams, didn’t exactly turn out that way.

The Eddies wrapped up the regular season with a perfect 6-0 record following their 7-1 win over the Bobcats.

While the final score may appear lopsided, a closer look at the individual flights reveals that three of them went to a third set. Edwardsburg took two out of those three flights to secure the victory.

“I thought our singles did a really nice job today,” Edwardsburg coach Kim Bartz said. “Brandywine always has strong doubles teams and that was evident as they took two of ours to three sets.

The Bobcats’ lone victory came at No. 3 doubles where first-year players Carlie Newman and Mackenzie Shelton defeated Sydney Brandcaleon and Katie Engle 5-7, 6-1 and 7-5.

“The team with the most experience won,” Brandywine coach Joe Marazita said. “I thought Brandywine fought really hard and we had a couple of three set matches that if we could have pulled those out we could have made the score a little bit closer and put some pressure on their other flights.”
