Died: April 20, 2012
Wilhelmine Rieder Horvath, 103, a long-time resident of Milton Township, passed to her rest on Friday, April 20, 2012, at her home after an illness. She was born Sept. 14, 1908, in Herxiem/Laundau, Germany, the daughter of Franz and Katharina (Geldon) Rieder.
Wilhelmine came to the United States in 1925 and lived in Soth Bend. She came to the Niles area when she married Paul. F. Horvath on July 23, 1932. She had been a cook, many years ago, at St. Joseph Hospital South Bend and also was a nanny for Judge Fairball and Mr. Milo. When she and her husband, Paul, moved to Niles, they were owners of a D-X service station. She loved to bake, sew and work in her garden. She especially loved her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Wilhelmine lost her husband, Paul, in 1979, and she lost her daughter-in-law, Floria Horvath, her parents and five brothers and six sisters. She has lived alone since her husband’s death, but her family has been “across the street” or just “down the street” from her at all times.
Surviving are her children, Jack Horvath and Katherine Ann (Larry) Reber, both of Niles. There are four grandsons, Bryan (Bonnie) Horvath of Edwardsburg, Tim Horvath, Todd (Shelly) Horvath and Brent (Deb) Horvath, all of Niles, and a granddaughter, Giget (Jeff)Herman of Elkhart, Ind. There are eight loving great-grandsons, Paul (Melissa) Horvath of Niles, Michael (Ashley) Horvath of Cassopolis, Matt Horvath of Las Vegas, Nev., Brandon Horvath, Austin Horvath, Carston Horvath, all of Niles and Josua Herman and Brock Herman of Elkhart, Ind. There are two great-great-granddaughters, Marin Horvath of Niles and Makenzie Horvath of Cassopolis. One niece survives, Paula (Philip) Hamberger of York, Pa.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 1 p.m. Tuesday, April 24 at St. Pius X Catholic Church, 52553 Fir Road, Granger, of which she was a member. Officiating will be Pastor William Schoolar. Burial will follow at Smith’s Chapel Cemetery, 29858 Redfield Rd., Niles. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Paul E. Mayhew Funeral Home, 26863 U.S. 12, Edwardsburg, where a vigil service will be at 5 p.m. Additional visitation will be from noon until service time Tuesday at St. Pius Church.
