Edwin L. Stephenson, 94, of North 16th Street, Niles, died at 5:27 p.m. Monday, March 12, 2012, at Silverbrook Manor, Niles, following a brief illness.
He was born March 18, 1917, in Niles to Nelson Stephenson and Mary (Strickfaden) Stephenson. He lived in the Niles and Cassopolis area all his life. He retired after 38 years of service at Tyler Refrigeration in Niles. He attended St. John’s Church of Christ in Niles. He was a World War II veteran, having served in the U.S. Army. He enjoyed playing baseball on the Tyler Refrigeration team. He was known as the “Handyman of Niles,” working with his friend, Joe.
Edwin married Ellenora V. (Wedel) Stephenson on Feb. 11, 1951, in Niles. She died Aug. 11, 1988.
Surviving family includes his daughters, Carole (Ron) Easton of Niles and Brenda (John) Joseph of Granger, Ind.; grandchildren, Tracy (Mike) Axline, Brad Easton, Joshua (Mary) Wiggins, Jennifer (Dave) Dematteo and Megan Joseph; great-grandchildren, William Lewis, Chloe Dematteo and Shelby Axline.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Lucille Bredeweg; brothers, Alton, Orville, Howard and Floyd Stephenson; and twin brothers, Ronald and Donald Stephenson.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, March 16, at Halbritter Funeral Home in Niles with the Rev. Joshua Wiggins officiating.
Burial will be at Mission Hills Memorial Gardens in Niles.
Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Full military honors will conclude the services at the graveside by U.S. Army Honor Guard and American Legion Post 51.
