Niles duo to play Saturday

Jimmy Gilley and Jason Lingle say they are excited to open for two more established bands this weekend. “It’s really flattering,” Lingle said.

Jimmy Gilley and Jason Lingle may have gotten the name for their band from a character from the TV show, but these guys are far from “Lost.”

Gilley and Lingle, who form the guitar duo Sawyer, know exactly what they are doing musically. Friends since high school and jam partners for more than a year, they have developed a bit of chemistry.

“We’ve hung out quite a bit,” Gilley said. “We were messing around playing guitars together and found some stuff we liked and said, ‘we could do something with this.’”

The result was a repertoire of 11 original songs, two of which they have recorded. The band hopes to drop an EP before its upcoming show.

Sawyer will bring its Christian alternative folk rock sound to Hope Community Church 8 p.m. Saturday, opening for South Bend-based The Rendition and Patchwork of Grand Rapids.

Gilley, 27, of Niles, said the name for their band came from the character with a “bad attitude” on Lost.

“We were watching the show, and we fell in love with the character,” he said. “We were joking about naming the band after him, and it stuck.”

Gilley said they like that Sawyer is “a nice person behind a veil of toughness.”

Lingle, 25 of South Bend, sings lead vocals, plays rhythm guitar and writes the lyrics.

“I’ve written a lot of poetry. And that often turns into songs,” said Lingle, who describes their sound as “a modern-day Bob Dillon, mixed with ‘90s, mixed with everything else.”

Lingle said his lyrics are influenced by the Bible, changes that happen in his life and “the good people” he’s around.

“People who have heard our stuff will be humming it later. Jason’s lyrics are really catchy,” Gilley said.
