Burton W. Cheney Jr., 63, of South Third Street, Niles, died at 8:20 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 11, 2012, at his home, unexpectedly.
He was born Aug. 8, 1948, in Niles to Burton W. and Lucille (Dickeson) Cheney, Sr. He graduated from Niles High School and lived in Niles all his life. He was a Vietnam era veteran, serving in the United States Army, including 12 months in Vietnam. He was a partner with his father and brother in Dandy Truck Covers of Niles. He was most currently employed at the Lakeland Athletic Club.
Burt enjoyed hunting and fishing in the area, and his greatest interest was caring for his grandchildren.
On May 9, 1968, in Niles he married the former Janet L. Myers, who survives. Also surviving are their children, Burton (Amanda) Cheney III of South Bend, Brian (Julie) Cheney and Teresa Miller, both of Niles; a daughter-in-law, Christine (Mrs. Brent) Cheney of Sarasota, Fla.; grandchildren, Ashlee, Weslee, Christina, Tye, Brock, Hailey, Kaia, Conner, Maddy, Emma and Lucas; Burt’s brother, David Cheney of Niles; and sisters, Julie Riggs of South Bend, Sandra Sheeley of Buchanan and Teresa Bartosch of South Bend; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a son, Brent Cheney, who died May 26, 2006, and by a brother, William Cheney, and sister, Becky Cheney, who died in her youth.
Services for Burt Cheney will be at 4 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 15, at Halbritter Funeral Home in Niles with the Rev. Ed Villalba of Life Action Ministries officiating, and will conclude with the veteran’s flag presentation and taps by the U.S. Army Honor Guard.
Interment will be at a later date at Mission Hills Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive relatives and friends beginning at 2 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
