David A. Buchanan, 61, of Niles, passed away at his residence Saturday, Dec. 31, 2011, with his family at his side, after a courageous battle with cancer.

He was born on April 28, 1950, in Niles to Earl E. and Harriet K. (Zellers) Buchanan.

David graduated from Brandywine High School Class of 1968. David studied at Ferris State University, Greer Technical Institute of Technology and The American School, both in Chicago. He was very talented working in the refrigeration, heating and air conditioning field. David also co-owned a local business with his family for many years.

He worked in Las Vegas in greyhound racing for a brief time. He was a member of Local 364 and the National Rifle Association.

He enjoyed being outdoors and playing sports. David played baseball for many years locally and travel teams; he also had the opportunity to try out for Major League Baseball. He also studied aviation and was gifted in many areas. Everyone knew David was the “go-to” guy for fixing anything. Many will recall the 52-foot Chris Craft boat

David basically restored by hand. David also loved spending time on his motorcycle on the open road. He also built and raced midget racecars. David had a special place in his heart for animals. He also cherished his grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his father.

David is survived by his mother, Harriet (Zellers) Buchanan of Niles; a daughter, Sherrie Buchanan of Battle Creek; two grandchildren, Richard and Ashley Barr, both of Battle Creek; his former wife, Sharlyne Day Perham; and a host of other friends and relatives. David will also be greatly missed by his dog, Jessie.

A celebration of David’s life will be held Wednesday, Jan. 4 at noon at Brown Funeral Home in Niles with visitation one hour prior.

A private interment will take place at Door Village Cemetery in LaPorte, Ind.

Memorial contributions may be made in David’s memory to the American Cancer Society or Hospice at Home.
