Time to get under way

The 2011-12 boys’ basketball and wrestling seasons will begin this week.

Tonight, Niles and Brandywine will begin their campaigns with home games.

The Vikings, coming off a 15-5 season, will play host to Portage Central in a Big 16 Conference West Division contest at 7:15 p.m.

Brandywine will play take on Marcellus at approximately 7:30 p.m.

Edwardsburg will also be in action tonight as the Eddies kick off their season against visiting White Pigeon. The game is scheduled to begin at 7:15 p.m.

On Wednesday night, the Niles wrestling team will open on the road at the Vicksburg Quad. Wrestling is set to start at 5:30 p.m.

Brandywine will be on the road as well as it heads to Decatur, along with Edwardsburg, for its season opener. Wrestling begins at 6 p.m.

Cassopolis will host Constantine, Centreville and River Valley for a quad meet beginning at 6 p.m.

Two-time defending Lakeland Conference champion Brandywine will host Cassopolis Thursday in an early season key girls’ basketball game. The Bobcats and Rangers will tip-off at 7:15 p.m.

On Friday night, Niles will host Benton Harbor in a boy-girl varsity doubleheader.

This also is an early season showdown between two of the West Division’s best teams.

The girls’ game will begin at 5:45 p.m. with the boys’ game to follow at approximately 7:15.

Over at Brandywine, the Bobcats will host Cassopolis in a key contest slated to start at 7:30 p.m.

Other area games will have Dowagiac hosting Allegan in a Wolverine Conference doubleheader beginning at 6 p.m., while Edwardsburg will be at Berrien Springs for a Lakeland Conference twinbill also beginning at 6.

Niles, Brandywine, Edwardsburg, Cassopolis and Dowagiac will all be in action on the mat Saturday morning.

The Vikings will wrestling at Jackson Lumen Christi beginning at 9 a.m., while Brandywine will be competing at the Vicksburg Invitational, which starts at 9.

Dowagiac will host the Chieftain Invitational at the middle school beginning at 9 a.m. with Cassopolis hosting its Colossal Duals at 9:30.
