‘Booze bomb’ sentenced in Cass court for 8th DUI

CASSOPOLIS — It was one of the worst drunken driving records Cass County Circuit Judge Michael Dodge has ever seen.
John Tufts, a Hesperia, Mich. resident, faced his sentencing for his eighth drunk driving conviction Friday.
“I’ve never seen anyone with five prior felony drunk driving offenses,” Dodge said. “I’m surprised you haven’t caused injury to yourself or someone else.”
Dodge handed Tufts a two- to 10-year prison sentence with credit for 92 days already served.
Tufts blew a 0.16 blood alcohol level, double the legal limit, after being pulled over on M-60 in Jones in September.
Prosecutor Victor Fitz said Tufts has “played Russian roulette” with the community by drinking and driving for too long.
“He’s a booze bomb waiting to detonate,” Fitz said.
Defense attorney Dale Blunier requested a local sentence and said Tufts’ wife and stepson need him at home.
“He lost his job, his home. He had a lot of demons,” Blunier said. “So he was self-medicating with alcohol.”
Tufts said he has begun taking his anti-depressants, which have “really helped.”
He also apologized to the court and his family.
“I love my family and will do whatever it takes to get back to them,” Tufts said.
