John Larry Burtzlaff, 67, of Hoyt Street, Niles, died at 3:30 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 16, 2011, at his home unexpectedly, but of natural causes.
He was born June 12, 1944, in Buchanan to John T. Burtzlaff and Rose Arabella (Eckler) Burtzlaff. He graduated from Niles High School and lived in Howard Township on the same farm all of his life.
He was previously employed at The Herald-Palladium in St. Joseph. He was also formerly employed at Printco, Simplicity Pattern Co. and the Niles Daily Star.
He was a Vietnam era veteran, having served in the United States Army. He was a member of American Legion Post 26 in Niles and Michiana Cruisers. He owned several classic cars, including his favorite 1968 Ford Mustang.
He loved spending time with his grandchildren and having family time. He enjoyed being outdoors in his rose garden, doing yardwork and home maintenance.
Surviving family includes his daughters, Kellie Burtzlaff of Niles, Kari (Ed) Martz of Niles; grandchildren, Nicholas Bella, Austin Simpson, Kalanie Simpson, Haili Martz, Kira Simpson; and brother, Larry Hayden of Niles.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Rose Burtzlaff, and a brother, Kenneth Burtzlaff.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 21, 2011, at Halbritter Funeral Home, Niles, with the Rev. Carl W. Bassett of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church officiating.
Burial will be a Mission Hills Memorial Gardens in Niles. Full military honors will conclude the committal by the U.S. Army Honor Guard and American Legion Post 51.
