A scandal that has rocked Penn State University has also cost it a football coach.

Joe Paterno, 84, will step down following the 2011 season according to a report in the Harrisburg Patriot-News. The paper was informed by Paterno’s son Scott Wednesday morning.

Paterno has coached 46 seasons at Penn State and has 409 victories, the most among major college coaches. He led the Nittany Lions to national championship in 1982 and 1986.

He is also a member of the College Football Hall of Fame.

Paterno is an icon at Penn State, where he has been an assistant and head coach for more than 60 years and has a library named after him at the institution.
