Ora Helen Olson, 103, formerly of St. Joseph and Berrien Springs, died Friday, Oct. 28, 2011, in Portland, Tenn., following a brief illness.
She was born Oct. 26, 1908 in Missouri to Benjamin Franklin and Cora (Green) Turner. She completed training as a registered nurse at the former Hinsdale (Illinois) Sanitarium (now Adventist Hinsdale Hospital), and served at the former Mercy Hospital of Benton Harbor and Memorial Hospital (now Lakeland) in St. Joseph. She lived in this area until 2009, when she moved to Portland to be near her granddaughter.
Helen was a member of Pioneer Memorial Church on the campus of Andrews University, Berrien Springs, for 65 years. She found great pleasure in genealogy, and through that study became a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution Algonquin Chapter in Benton Harbor, a member of the Jamestowne Society and the National Society of the Magna Charta Dames.
She was married to Oliver Linne Olson, who preceded her in death in 1998. She was also preceded in death by her children, Shirley Huddleston and Roger Olson; two sisters and one brother.
Helen is survived by six grandchildren, Margaret Gammel, Tami Huddleston, Julie Huddleston Stewart, Lewis Edward Huddleston, Jr. and Christian Olson; 11 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.
The service for Helen Olson will be at 4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 12, at Pioneer Memorial Church with Pastor Micheal Goetz of the church officiating.
The family will receive relatives and friends beginning at 3 p.m. Saturday at the church.
