CHICAGO — The Big Ten Network’s fall series, BTN LiveBIG, continues Monday with a profile of former Spartan defensive tackle John Shinsky, who is transforming the lives of abandoned and disadvantaged children through his orphanage, The City of the Children.

Hosted by former Michigan football star Dhani Jones, the program airs 7:30 p.m. and highlights ways in which the Big Ten community has served others.

Shinsky, who also spent his youth at an orphanage, embarked on a bike ride from Lansing to Mexico in 2007 to raise funds for his orphanage. The City of Children provides education and training opportunities that enable children to grow into caring and productive adults who give back to their communities. The orphanage is now home to nearly 40 children where Shinsky continues his life pursuit as a teacher and mentor.

The sixth installment of the eight-episode series will also feature former Northwestern tennis star Elissa Clapp and Ohio State sprinter Elon Simms, who are “living big” through their service with Teach For America and the David John Guardiola Scholarship Fund, respectively.

Viewers can learn more about these inspirational stories and others at BTNLiveBIG.com. Online, viewers can also discover ways they can act, serve and inspire through BTN LiveBIG’s 25 partner service organizations.

The site also will help aspiring students connect with campus volunteer centers and inform Big Ten fans of local service opportunities through VolunteerMatch.org

As part of the new fall program, BTN will grant a $1,000 Scholarship for Outstanding Service to a student from each Big Ten university.

To be eligible, students must be enrolled full-time at a Big Ten school and volunteer a minimum of 10 hours before Dec. 9.

The network will select five finalists from each school and ask Big Ten fans to vote online for the most inspiring story. Full scholarship rules and more information on how to apply can be found at BTNLiveBIG.com.
