VandenHeede finishes 7th at Kiwanis Invitational

STURGIS —The Niles boys’ cross country team finished fifth at the Sturgis Kiwanis Invitational Saturday.
Detroit Catholic Central was the overall winner as it swept the top five positions to score a perfect 15 points.
Sturgis was second with 56 points and Northwest High School third with 91 points. The Vikings finished with 131 points, while Edwardsburg was sixth with 145.
Thomas Fagan of Detroit Catholic Central won the individual title with a time of 16:44.
Niles’ Sam VandenHeede was seventh with a time of 17:13. Daniel Sierra was 25th. Nick Borkowski was 30th, Sean Morgan 32nd, and Daulton Britton 39th to round out the top five finishers for the Vikings.
The Niles girls’ team finished sixth. Edwardsburg was fourth in the race won by Grandville.
The Eddies’ Aubrey Ritchey finished fourth overall with a time of 19:47. Grandville’s Sammy Mondry was the overall winner with a clocking of 18:35.
Niles’ top finisher was Bridgett Carpenter, who was 21st with a time of 22:36.
Rounding out the top five finishers for the Vikings were Anne Tyler who was 24th, Abigail Gaines who was 27th, Libby Hein who was 29th and Allison Grant who was 32nd.
Brandywine competed in the Division 3-4 race, but did not field a full squad for the event.
Michael Robbins was 21st for the Bobcats in the boys’ race with a time of 18:28. Collin Mattiford finished 24th with a time of 18:46 and Evan Zacharaski 37th with a time of 21:37.
Allison Zacharaski was the lone Brandywine competitor in the girls’ race. She was 33rd with a time of 28:50.
