While fundraising continues, the Dowagiac Senior Center is one step closer to reality as work began Monday to transform 227 S. Front St.

Dowagiac Senior Center will contain a variety of opportunities for fitness, learning and social support for older adults.

Cass County Council on Aging received a $10,000 matching-funds grant for the building campaign from the Frederick S. Upton Foundation of St. Joseph.

“When you make a gift to the campaign, the donation is doubled with this grant,” said Bob Long, director of development.

“The idea is that we can reach the total of $350,000 sooner.”
