Dowagiac wins two out of four

OTSEGO — The Dowagiac boys’ cross country team split with four teams at the Wolverine Conference mini-jamboree hosted by Otsego Tuesday afternoon.

The Chieftains defeated Allegan 23-32 and Comstock 26-29, while they were defeated by Otsego 20-43 and Vicksburg 19-44.

Dowagiac’s Chris Gantt finished second overall with a time of 16:46. Vicksburg’s Joey Fici was the winner of the boys’ race as he was clocked at 16:38.

Ben Thompson of Dowagiac was 23rd with a time of 20:09. Ryne Wilming was 26th (20:36), Marc Tyrakowski 29th (20:53), Julian Marshall 34th (22:04) and Dylan Chorba 38th (24:01).

Sean Thompson was 40th (25:07), Shane Filley 42nd (25:33), Jon Robinson 44th (28:21) and Kenney Gibbons 45th (31:47).

Dowagiac did not fare as well in the girls’ portion of the meet as it defeated only Comstock, which did not field a full team.

The Chieftains were defeated by Allegan 15-46, Otsego 15-50 and Vicksburg 15-50.

Gabriella Perrin of Vicksburg was the overall winner with a time of 19:29.

Dowagiac’s top finisher was Holly Luth, who placed 21st with a time of 24:23.

Kristina Bunn was 28th (25:43), Sarah Long 36th (27:17), Rebecca Luth 41st (28:23), Kendra Wilson 44th (29:50), Paige Schaus 45th (29:52), Corinne Kasper 46th (30:05), Kayla Yakim 49th (33:02) and Brittany Smith 51st (34:57).

“The heat took its toll on most of the runners, but several of our kids ran well,” Dowagiac coach Ken Jordan said. “It was nice for our boys to break through with a couple of wins after last week’s one point loss to Paw Paw.”
