Kyle Cupp scored his third goal and Zach McClellan added an insurance goal as visiting Otsego defeated the Chieftains in double overtime Monday night, 5-3.

The Chieftains trailed the Bulldogs 2-1 at halftime of the Wolverine Conference soccer clash, but scored a pair of second half goals to force the overtime.

Hazen McMeeken had a pair of goals, one in each half, while Craig Zebell had the other score for the Chieftains.

McMeeken gave Dowagiac a 1-0 lead in the 16th minute, while the Chieftains put one into their own net in the 21st minute to tie the match at 1-1.

Cupp had the first of his hat trick in the 24th minute to give Otsego the one-goal halftime advantage.

In the second half, McMeeken tied the match at 2-2 in the 48th minute only to have Cupp score again in the 64th minute to stake the Bulldogs to a 3-2 advantage.

With time winding down, Zebell tied the match again in the 77th minute.

Cupp scored in the 94th minute and McClellan scored two minutes later to give Otsego the victory.

Dowagiac held a 23-21 advantage in shots on goal in the contest.

“As usual with Otsego it goes down to the wire,” Dowagiac coach Mike Williams said. “The boys played a tough game and came out unlucky. Everyone played very well. Paul Lamphere did a great job in goal and has showed improvement every game. We are looking like a more experienced team as we head toward districts next week.
