Dowagiac showed the Comstock Colts how to kick, pass and shoot a soccer ball Wednesday in an 8-0 Wolverine Conference encounter.

“Comstock is a young team and this is the best passing team than any other team I’ve had here,” mentioned Mike Williams, the Dowagiac coach. “We move the ball well when we are on.”

It took Dowagiac (9-2-2, 3-2) 15 minutes to get on its goal spurt as senior Michael Williams of Comstock (4-9-1, 1-4) turned away the first five of shot attempts before junior Alvaro Scherer slithered in a corner kick with 24:47 showing on the clock.

Two-time All-State senior Craig Zebell answered 40 seconds later on a sliding shot that was assisted by junior Nate Michael for a 2-0 advantage.

“This is a good group of guys and we hang around a lot, which makes me very proud to be a Chieftain,” stated Zebell. “Soccer is my favorite sport and would like to play in college, but I want the end here to be a memorable one when it comes.”

The score was 3-0 at intermission with the other score coming on a 20-yard shot that sailed over Williams from the foot of freshman Jorge Ruiz.

“Our goal at halftime was to score five goals in 20 minutes,“ said Williams. “These kids are working hard, but injuries and sickness are hurting our practices.”

After missing a couple opportunities, senior Hazen McMeekan crossed over on a dribble to send a short left foot shot past Williams just before four minutes had been played and one minute later, Ruiz stood near the goal line when the Colts’ goal keeper had a shot slip through his hands onto his waiting foot.

Zebell was instrumental in the final trio of tallies with two assists and a goal, with the finale going to Travis True and the sophomore wasted no time ending the game with 22:35 still on the clock.

“I like the assists, because have my share of goals (18) and it makes other players happy,” explained Zebell. “We want to win districts again and obviously to go all the way to state, which has been a dream of mine.”

The Chieftains finished with 31 shots with Williams sending 11 away from the net.  Dowagiac junior Paul Lamphere and sophomore Nate Stewart each played a half and made a save on one of the six total Comstock shot attempts.

“We have a tough remaining two weeks of the regular season left and we are looking forward to it,” concluded Williams.
