The Niles Daily Star has compiled a comprehensive schedule of area events held this week to remember Sept. 11:
Andrews University events
Andrews University is remembering the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks with a weeklong series of events, “Memories of Sacrifice, Reasons for Hope,” Sept. 4–11. All events are free and open to the public.
Among remaining events include the exhibit, “Memories of Sacrifice, Reasons for Hope: Post 9-11 Reflections,” which will be on display through Sunday.
On Sunday, there will be a gathering at the U.S. flagpole on the University Green at 8:30 a.m. Join the nation in prayer and a moment of silence and receive a small U.S. flag. Together participants will walk to the university entrance, where they will plant flags. At 8:46 a.m., the time when the first plane crashed into the World Trade Center, there will be a moment of silence remembering all those who were lost on 9-11. The week of events will conclude with the “Remembering 9-11 Commemorative Concert,” an emphasis of hope and patriotism through music and readings, at the Howard Performing Arts Center. This fitting concert will be performed by Andrews University choral ensembles, the Symphony Orchestra and the Wind Symphony. Special guests include U.S. Rep. Fred Upton of Michigan’s 6th District; Milt Richter, Berrien Springs village president; Niels-Erik Andreasen, president of Andrews University; and Dwight K. Nelson, senior pastor of Pioneer Memorial Church.
Buchanan Commons service
The Buchanan American Legion Post 51 and the Buchanan Area Ministerial Association will conduct a Patriot Day, 9-11 Community-wide Service of Remembrance Sunday at 7 p.m. at the Buchanan Commons.
A commemoration ceremony will honor the victims of the attacks and first responders.
The ceremony will also honor the military personnel who have died in the battle against terrorism.
An offering will be taken to provide a memorial scholarship fund for the children of service men and women killed while on duty on or after Sept. 11, 2001.
The ceremony will include songs of remembrance and a celebration and brief presentations by veterans, clergy and representatives of the police and fire departments.
The service will conclude with a 21-gun salute and taps.
Lest We Forget memorial tribute
A memorial tribute will feature rousing music by the Southshore Concert Band at 2 p.m. Sunday at Lake Michigan College’s Mendel Center Mainstage in Benton Harbor.
There will be a 25-minute visual and musical presentation by the concert band and they have requested no applause during this time. Afterward, four speakers — Jim Kesterke, former Berrien Springs police chief; Hank Richmond, veteran, retired from the Pentagon; Gary Blied, veteran, airline pilot; and Johnny Barreiro, retired from New York Police Department — will each reflect on Ground Zero, The Pentagon and United Airlines Flight 93 from their own personal experience. If scheduling allows for attendance, U.S. Rep. Fred Upton will express the nation’s resolve to defeat terrorism.
Jim Cassidy will emcee as we honor the losses of 9-11. Under the direction of Dale Reuss, the two-hour program of patriotic favorites also includes a stirring musical memorial to the 9-11 attack: “Rushmore” by Alfred Reed; “The Light Eternal” by James Swearingen; “Amazing Grace” by Frank Ticheli and “As All the Heavens Were a Bell” by Jay Babcock. The program will conclude with patriotic music.
Advance tickets are $10 for adults; $5 for children 12 and under; children on laps are free. Advance tickets are available at Martin’s Super Market in both St. Joseph and Stevensville, as well as from Lest We Forget members. Day of show only, tickets will be available at the Mendel Box Office at a cost of $12.
