Dowagiac kickers still undefeated

The Dowagiac soccer team scored six first half goals on its way to a 7-2 non-conference win over Berrien Springs Wednesday night.

The Chieftains got first half goals from Joey Pasternak in the third minute, Craig Zebell in the eight and ninth minutes, Jorge Ruizz in the 29th minute, Alvaro Scherer in the 34th minute and Leo Ramirez in the 38th minute.

Jose Lopez, Scherer, Zebell and Tony Solis each had an assist in the opening 40 minutes.

The Shamrocks picked up the first two goals of the second half to make it a 6-2 match.

Temitope Idowa and Isaac Perozo scored in the 67th and 70th minutes respectively.

Dowagiac’s Hazen McMeeken capped the scoring with a goal in the 79th minute off an assist by Zebell.

Dowagiac held a 22-7 advantage in shots on goal. Paul Lamphere made six saves for the Chieftains. Christian Haack had 12 saves for Berrien Springs.

“We played well, but had a couple of breakdowns at mid that allowed late goals by Berrien,” Dowagiac coach Mike Williams said. “Looking forward to some tough games next week.”
