Police report several cases of fraudulent calls

The Ontwa Township-Edwardsbug police ask citizens to report information that could lead to an arrest in the following reported criminal activities. To do so, contact the department directly.

Larceny at Garver and May

A larceny was reported recently near Garver Lake Road and May Street. According to Ontwa Township-Edwardsburg Police, on or before Aug. 19 someone entered a vehicle and took an air compressor, a case of drills and a 6.5 hp Toro lawnmower next to the garage.

Fence vandalized

Destruction of a residential fence was reported Aug. 20 in front of a residence on North Shore Drive. Ontwa Township-Edwardsburg Police is reporting that someone broke a fence rail in front of the home.

Drunken driving arrest

Ontwa Township-Edwardsburg Police recently reported intoxicated driver activity near the state line. An officer from the Ontwa Township-Edwardsburg Police Department noticed a vehicle acting in a suspicious manner just south of Redfield Road that turned around and was headed south into Indiana.

The officer related the information to the St. Joseph County police in Indiana and continued to follow the vehicle into St. Joseph County, as the driving was so erratic he believed another driver may be injured. St. Joseph County police intercepted the vehicle in Granger, where the driver was subsequently arrested for intoxicated driving.

Bicycle theft

Ontwa Township-Edwardsburg Police is releasing information about a recent larceny of a bicycle near Brady Road and U.S. 12. Someone removed a bicycle from the property Aug. 22. The bike was described as having oversized tires with white walls, a pedal that had fallen off and the other about to fall off. The covers on the handlebars were also torn. The bike was brown and bronze in color and about 26 inches tall.

Gasoline theft

An entry and theft was reported on Twilight Street in Ontwa Township. The Ontwa Township-Edwardsburg Police is releasing information about a recent entry without breaking and larceny of gasoline on Twilight Street in Ontwa Township.  Sometime between 6 p.m. Aug. 22 and 8 a.m. Aug. 23, someone entered a garage on Twilight Street and took two 5-gallon cans of gasoline from the garage. They also looked through the vehicle that was inside of the garage but did not take anything from the vehicle. They apparently poured the gasoline into a vehicle and left both cans near the roadway.

Fraudulent phone calls

Ontwa Township-Edwardsburg Police Chief Kenneth Wray has reported a rash of fraudulent credit card calls. These persons are representing themselves as members of a credit card company such as Visa or Mastercard. They advise that the victim has won a free gift or money or both. When the victim advises them that they will not give out the credit card number, the caller tells them the credit card number and asks for confirmation, which does somehow match.

Police advise the public to not give card numbers to anyone and do not confirm a card number to anyone. Mail fraud is also taking place. Police warn, do not send money in hopes of winning money, a vacation or other prizes.

Destruction of mail

A resident has reported their mailbox and mail were destroyed by fireworks. The Ontwa Township-Edwardsburg Police released information about a recent destruction of property incident on Elkhart Road.  Sometime on the night of Saturday, Aug. 20, someone lit a sparkler and placed it into a mailbox. The fire from the sparkler lit the mail in the box on fire, damaging both the box and mail.
