The Buchanan American Legion Post No. 51 and the Buchanan Area Ministerial Association will conduct a Patriot Day 9-11 Community-wide Service of Remembrance on Sunday, Sept. 11 at 7 p.m. at the Buchanan Commons. At this service, we will mark the 10-year anniversary of that fateful day. Buchanan area residents will come together in a commemoration ceremony to honor the victims of Sept. 11.
The commemoration ceremony will honor the victims of the attacks on the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and the airline flight takeovers. The first responders who died rushing in to save others will be honored by a show of support by their sister and brother area firefighters and police officers.
The ceremony will also honor the American military personnel who have died in the battle against terrorism and the other members of the service who continue to fight. A special offering will be taken as persons leave the ceremony for the American Legion Fund, “We Will Remember,” providing for the children left behind. The offering will provide a memorial scholarship fund for the children of the service men and women killed while on duty with the United States Armed Forces on or after Sept. 11, 2001.
The ceremony will include songs of remembrance and celebration and brief presentations made by veterans, area clergy and representatives of the police and fire community. The service will conclude with a 21-gun salute and taps.
