Rodger L. Tibbs, 82, of Higgins Street in Niles, died at 10:12 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 6, 2011, at his home of a brief illness.
Mr. Tibbs was born Dec. 6, 1928 in Niles to Allen and Pearl Tess (Collins) Tibbs. He was a lifetime resident of Niles.
In 1990, he retired after 22 years of service from the United States Postal Service. He was previously employed at the Niles Board of Public Works.
Rodger was a veteran of the Korean Conflict, having served in the United States Navy from 1949-52.
He was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Niles. He was also a member of the National Association of Letter Carriers, Papason Mamason Korean Veterans, American Legion Post No. 26 and Am Vets Post No. 1978, now in Niles.
On Dec. 21, 1952 in Long Island, N.Y., he married the former Gladys Alonso, who survives. Surviving family also includes their sons, Gerald (Gail) Tibbs and Keith Tibbs, both of Niles; grandchildren, Allen, Jaime, Kodee, Dylon and Zackary Tibbs, Miki and Michael Wagley; step-grandchildren, Bradley, Brittanie, Tonya, Tricia, Kristina and Katelin Ritchey; great-grandchildren, Anneke, Allison and Caiden Wagley, Jerid and Maria Norris, Christian and Alyssa Bradley, Tessa Wise and Alexis Tibbs; step-great-grandchildren, Ashley Simpson, MArissa and Trey Mark; great-great-grandson, Brian Aldrich; and special companion and friend, “Precious.”
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Vera Lynn Tibbs, who died May 2, 2008; grandson, Brent Joseph Tibbs; parents, Allen and Pearl Tibbs; brothers, Robert and Kenneth Tibbs; and sisters, Barbara Geiger and Harriett Patterson.
Funeral services for Rodger L. Tibbs will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 10 at First Presbyterian Church in Niles with the Rev. Fran Lane-Lawrence of the church officiating, where full military honors will conclude the services by American Legion Post No. 51 in Buchanan.
Interment will be at Silverbrook Cemetery in Niles.
The family will receive relatives and friends beginning one hour prior to the services on Wednesday at the church.
